Natural processed coffees remain extremely rare in Kenya, where the specialty coffee industry has long focused on washed processing to highlight the country’s signature clarity and vibrant acidity. For many years, natural coffees were often linked to lower-grade “Mbuni” lots rather than specialty production. Only recently have a small number of producers and washing stations begun carefully experimenting with high-quality naturals. Today, exceptional Kenyan naturals like Thunguri are still uncommon, offering a unique combination of Kenya’s bright structure with the deeper fruit sweetness and candy-like character of natural processing.
